Perinatal Chiropractic Care
Having been through two pregnancies and births personally, I know first-hand the benefits to receiving specific perinatal care during and after pregnancy.
Being a chiropractor, I already understood that the nerves from my lower back innervated my growing babies, and I wanted to ensure that there was clear communication between my Nervous System and my developing fetuses to help with optimal development.
I specifically remember how I could feel the effects of “relaxin” (the pregnancy hormone that helps all of the ligaments to relax).
My sacrum became very unbalanced and painful during my first pregnancy! Getting adjusted was definitely awesome for that and helped to give me complete relief! My first child was breech around 36 weeks, so I had my chiropractor do Webster’s Technique, and then she turned head down. (I am certified through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association to perform Webster’s Technique.) These are just a few examples of some of the benefits I experienced from getting adjusted myself while pregnant.
Did you know that a majority of the pregnant women I have adjusted reported that Chiropractic Care helped them with all sorts of common pregnancy symptoms? A lot of women report relief from these pregnancy-related symptoms:
- Back Pain
- Hip Pain
- Neck Pain
- Shoulder Pain
- Arm/Hand Pain
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Digestive Issues
- Groin/Pubic Symphysis Pain
- Round Ligament Pain
- Pelvic alignment
- Baby positioning
- Waddling/Difficulty Walking
Getting adjusted also helps to prepare women for giving birth by making sure the pelvis is in proper alignment and can move and open optimally. Adjustments also decrease the chances of extra painful back labor and positional issues with the baby.
I always explain to my clients, that even when birth goes as perfectly as we could hope for, it is still a very physically transforming experience. For some women birth may be like a 5k race, and for others, like it was for me, it’s more of a marathon. It’s pretty amazing what happens in our bodies and pelvises to facilitate birth. Often times, our pelvic floors are stretched out and our spines and pelvises are not aligned correctly after birth. Getting adjusted soon after birth helps to alleviate any pain or discomfort resulting from birth, by realigning everything and taking pressure off of the nerves. Chiropractic care also aids in helping our bodies to recover more quickly and thoroughly.
Post-Partum Care for Baby
Did you know getting adjusted is beneficial, gentle, & safe for newborns and babies too? You might be wondering why a newborn baby would get adjusted. Not only is birth a huge physical event for mom, it is obviously a necessary physical stress for the baby too. Going through the birth canal, especially if there is any twisting or pulling that happens to get the baby out, puts a big amount of stress and often torsion on a very fragile spine. This can cause overlapping of the baby’s cranial plates (that may not resolve on its own), and misalignments of the vertebrae causing pressure on the baby’s Nervous System. Common newborn and baby symptoms, that many moms have reported that getting adjusted has provided relief and resolution to, are nursing issues (to include latch problems and favoring one side which can lead to mastitis for the mom if left untreated), frequent spitting up/vomit/reflux, gas, colic, constipation, frequent irritability, problems digesting, sleeping problems, and disposition. Another issue that can also be helped with gentle specific chiropractic, is when baby gets a flat head or a misshapen head from unresolved cranial plate overlapping. Parents are thrilled to find out about a natural solution, that allows them to help their precious baby conservatively, safely, and effectively by receiving Chiropractic care.
